Upwards of 100 million men around the world experience erectile dysfunction (ED), yet 85% of them won't seek treatment, often because there are too many negative connotations surrounding this medical diagnosis.
At UroCare Marbella, we are here to set the record straight. If you read nothing more than this first paragraph, know this: erectile dysfunction is not only extremely common in men of all ages, sexual orientations, and levels of romantic intimacy, in certain cases it may also be much more easily treated than most realise. So please, if you are suffering from erectile dysfunction, know that the professionals at UroCare Marbella are always available to explain exactly what ED is, help you find what's causing your ED, and discuss a range of possible treatment options that can get your sex life back on track.
Let's look at some of the common myths surrounding erectile dysfunction and how UroCare can help:
Myth #1: Only elderly men suffer from erectile dysfunction
False. While older men tend to report their condition more, this is partially because erectile dysfunction does have a higher incidence rate in men over 75 and partially because younger men are hesitant to talk to others, even medical professionals, about their ED. This doesn't mean that it doesn't happen though, and with regularity. So if you are suffering from erectile dysfunction, know this: you are not alone. No matter your age, no matter your sexuality, no matter your level of sexual activity, you are not alone and you have nothing to be embarrassed about. Speak with the urology specialists at UroCare so that they can determine the cause of your ED (it could be physical, not psychological!), treat it (it's often easier than you think!) and take control of your sex life again.
Myth #2: Erectile dysfunction is a psychological problem, not a medical condition.
Not exactly. While occasional difficulty keeping or maintaining an erection is often (but not always) stress-related, if you are experiencing the same difficulty on a more regular basis, you should speak with your doctor so that they can determine if your erectile dysfunction is merely a symptom of another medical condition that needs to be addressed. Very likely, it is. In fact, up to 75% of men with erectile dysfunction are experiencing it because of a stenosis (narrowing of the blood vessel) in their penis - which is easily treatable, especially if you speak with one of the specialists at UroCare Marbella who use state-of-the-art technology to regularly and painlessly, treat ED due to arterial stenosis. The best advice we can offer: talk to your doctor early. Stressing about ED will only make your ED worse, whether its cause is medical or psychological. And if there are underlying conditions that need treatment, catching them early is always best.
Myth #3: Erectile dysfunction is annoying, but not dangerous.
Partially true. The inability to achieve or maintain an erection isn't itself medically dangerous but it can have negative psychological effects which, if you ask us, is enough of a reason to speak with a medical professional if you are experiencing ED. Beyond that though, is the fact that erectile dysfunction may be a vascular condition so it can often be a symptom of a more serious - and more dangerous, medical condition such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, kidney disease and more. And getting early treatment for any of these medical problems can make a big difference to your overall health, including your sexual health. That's why if you are experiencing symptoms of erectile dysfunction for more than 3 months, you should absolutely bring it up with a doctor. A few questions from an urologist and an easy ultrasound, CT-scan, or provocation test is often all that's needed to determine the cause of your ED and put a treatment plan in place so that it can quickly become a thing of the past.
Myth #4: Resolving erectile dysfunction is a matter of taking a pill and “dealing with it.”
No. You should never have to “just deal with” any medical condition and erectile dysfunction is no different. While your doctor may recommend medication as part of your ED treatment plan, these are in place to help manage your symptoms while they determine and treat the root cause.
If like many ED patients, our UroCare specialists see you are experiencing erectile dysfunction due to stenosis (partially-blocked artery) that reduces blood flow to the penis, a simple, non-painful and non-invasive procedure, known as Penile Artery Endovascular Intervention, is usually all that's needed to restore your sexual health back to what it once was.
